A Record of Milestones & Achievements
1987
Pogoda Cos. Founded
Pogoda Cos. Founder/President Maurice Pogoda started the company in Farmington Hills, Michigan, to broker self-storage facilities. Starting as a one-man brokerage, the company laid the groundwork for what would become one of the nation’s leading self-storage operators in a largely undiscovered industry at the time.
1990
Took on 1st Property Management Accountt
Recognizing the growing need for institutional quality management in the self-storage sector, Pogoda Companies expanded its services to include third-party property management, setting a new standard for operational excellence in the Midwest.
1992
Acquired 1st Property
Bought first property in Mt. Clemens, Michigan. After gaining experience through management, Maurice saw an opportunity to acquire storage in the Metro Detroit market.
1995
1st Ground-up Development
First ground-up development in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with 75,000 sq. ft. of drive-up storage. This was the first of a string of ground-up or big-box renovations delivering storage to underserved markets.
1998
Sold 7 Owned Properties
Sold seven owned properties, giving its equity partners a 20%+ IRR.
1999
Pioneered Multi-Story in Michigan
Developed a multi-story facility, the first of its kind in the state of Michigan, on the world-famous 8 Mile Road that borders Detroit and its suburbs. We still own this property, and it is the highest-grossing facility in our portfolio.
2004
Company Expands into Ohio
Building on its success in Michigan, Pogoda Companies expanded into Ohio, leveraging its operational expertise and market knowledge to strengthen its Midwest footprint.
2015
Sold 12 Properties
After owning these facilities for multiple years, Pogoda Companies sold twelve stabilized properties to take advantage of a market peak. Selling a portion of properties outright and transitioning others with 1031 opportunities, Pogoda positioned itself for future acquisitions and developments.
2018-2021
Next Generation of Pogoda Joins Company
Next generation of Pogodas joins the Company as Adam, Daniel, and Michael Pogoda enter the business. Adam Pogoda joined in 2018 and expanded the company into new markets such as Grand Rapids, Detroit, northern Michigan, and Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio. Michael Pogoda joined in 2020 to double down on our aggressive growth strategy. Daniel Pogoda joined in 2021 in the finance and asset management capacity, adding Fortune 500 expertise and professionalism to our rapidly expanding portfolio.
2021
Company Expands into Indiana/Kentucky
Expanded into Indiana and Kentucky. We acquired a 5-property portfolio in Owensboro, Kentucky, and Evansville, Indiana, followed by New Albany and Carmel, Indiana. Today, the company owns and manages nine facilities in these markets and continues to expand.
2024
70+ Owned/Managed Properties & Growing
We are expanding our footprint in new states and anticipate accelerated growth in the Midwest and beyond. The company’s institutional quality systems and dedicated team enable it to consistently rank among the top self-storage operators in the U.S.
2025
Rebranded to National Storage Management
Rebranded as National Storage Management Co. to better reflect our National Storage brand and create brand awareness and consistency throughout our portfolio. Additionally, the rebrand reflects the growth of the company into a vertically integrated self-storage company offering construction management, an internal call center, sophisticated marketing, and tenant insurance solutions.
